Language Choice in criminal and asylum procedures with participants from African countries of origin

The project based at the Department of African Studies at the University of Vienna investigates the process of language choice in asylum and criminal procedures with African asylum seekers or defendants.
The research team intends to examine reasons for language-based misunderstandings and to work out possible solutions in cooperation with courts and agencies.
The project, under the direction of Prof. Walter Schicho, is executed by the researchers Gabriele Slezak und Martina Rienzner in cooperation with the research platform “Human Rights in the European Context”.
